Charli Blake è una ragazza che vive in un paesino sperduto della Tasmania, Pipers Cove: vive con il fratello maggiore Alex, proprietario del piccolo locale che funge da punto di ritrovo per gli abitanti del luogo, ed è abituata ad essere sulla bocca di tutti per i guai in cui si caccia continuamente. Il paese e la sua mentalità chiusa non si adattano però allo spirito di Charli, che sogna di poter girare il mondo e conta i giorni che la separano dalla consegna del diploma per poter finalmente partire con la sua migliore amica Nicole per il viaggio che ormai stanno organizzando da anni. Un giorno la vita monotona di Pipers Cove viene movimentata dall’arrivo di un ragazzo straniero: si tratta di Adam Décarie, il nipote della prof di francese giunto in visita da New York per trascorrere le vacanze estive; l’incontro tra Charli e Adam pare voluto dal destino e per la ragazza, abituata a vivere affidandosi al fato, segna una svolta fondamentale. Riuscirà Charli a domare il suo spirito ribelle per amore di Adam oppure il suo bisogno di libertà prenderà il sopravvento?

Primo volume di una trilogia, Saving Wishes è uno young adult ambientato in un paese che raramente troviamo in letteratura, la Tasmania: ripide scogliere si alternano a baie sabbiose spazzate dal vento e dalle onde, un vero e proprio paradiso per i surfisti come Charli. La protagonista è una ragazza che usa la spavalderia e il sarcasmo come armi di difesa dalle lingue taglienti dei ragazzi che l’hanno presa di mira, prime fra tutti le “bellissime”, tre ragazze perfide come streghe che non perdono occasione per punzecchiarla sul suo passato; mi è piaciuto molto il modo in cui l’autrice ha rappresentato Charli, mostrando entrambi i lati del suo carattere (selvaggio ma anche vulnerabile) e soprattutto cercando di farne un modello cui fare riferimento: il messaggio che viene dato è che chiunque può sbagliare, l’importante sta nel saper affrontare le conseguenze dei propri gesti e nell’aver imparato la lezione. Nonostante alcune volte lei stessa sia il suo peggior nemico, come personaggio Charli mi è piaciuto molto proprio perché ho potuto notare una crescita personale, una naturale evoluzione del suo carattere che l’ha resa molto credibile. Sul protagonista maschile non ho molto da dire, pur essendo fondamentale ai fini della storia l’autrice ha scelto di lasciarlo quasi in ombra rispetto a Charli, preferendo magari dargli maggiore spazio nei libri successivi; ciò che mi è piaciuto di più però è senza dubbio la pulizia di questa storia, ennesima dimostrazione che non servono improbabili (a volte ridicole) scene hot per rendere uno young adult piacevole.

Non vedo l’ora di poter leggere il seguito, assolutamente consigliato!

Charli Blake is a girl who lives in Pipers Cove, a small town in Tasmania: she lives with her older brother Alex, the owner of the small café that acts as a meeting point for everyone in town, and she’s used to be on everyone's lips for being a troublemaker. Pipers Cove and its closed mentality, however, don’t fit Charli’s spirit, she dreams to travel around the world and counts the days that separate her from graduation, when she’ll finally leave with her best friend Nicole for the journey they’ve organized for years. One day Pipers Cove’s monotonous life is shocked by the arrival of a foreign guy: he’s Adam Décarie, the nephew of the French high school teacher, and he’s there to spend his summer holidays; the meet between Charli and Adam seems willed by fate and to her, used to live by relying on fate, marks a turning point. Will Charli tame her rebellious spirit for the love of Adam or her need to be free will prevail?

First book of a trilogy, Saving Wishes is a young adult set in a country that we rarely find in the literature, Tasmania: steep cliffs alternate with sandy bays swept by wind and waves, a true paradise for surfers as Charli. The main character is a girl who uses bravado and sarcasm as a weapon of defense against the sharp tongues of the guys who picked her on, first of all the "beautifuls", three girls as wicked as witches who never miss a chance to tease Charli on her past; I really liked the way the author has represented Charli, showing both sides of her character (wild but also vulnerable) and above all trying to make her a model to refer to: the message given is that anyone can make mistakes, the most important thing is knowing how to deal with the consequences of our actions and learn lessons from them. Though sometimes she is her own worst enemy, I really liked Charli because I have noticed her personal growth, a natural evolution of her character that has made her very believable. About the male protagonist I don’t have much to say, despite being very important to the story he seems almost overshadowed by Charli, perhaps the author preferred to give  him more space in the next books; what I liked most, however, is undoubtedly the cleaning of this story, another demonstration that you do not need improbable (sometimes ridiculous) hot scenes to make a young adult enjoyable.

I can’t wait to read the second book, absolutely recommended!
