Recensione/review: Perception di Lee Strauss

(You can read the review at the bottom of the post)

Buona lettura ^^

Titolo: Perception
Autore: Lee Strauss
Editore: All Night Reads
Pagine: 241
Prezzo: 2,68€
Trama: Seventeen year old Zoe Vanderveen is a GAP--a genetically altered person. She lives in the security of a walled city on prime water-front property along side other equally beautiful people with extended life spans. Her brother Liam is missing.
Noah Brody is a natural who lives on the outside. He leads protests against the GAPs and detests the widening chasm they've created between those who have and those who don't. He doesn't like girls like Zoe and he has good reason not to like her specifically.
Zoe's carefree life takes a traumatic turn. She's in trouble and it turns out that Noah, the last guy on earth she should trust, is the only one who can help her.
The PERCEPTION Series books (SF/mystery/romance) are Young Adult novels that take place in the not too distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions--both financially and philosophically. It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or ally us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there's room to fall in love.

Recensione

Assolutamente consigliato!

Review

Zoe is a seventeen year old girl who lives with her parents and her brother Liam in a wonderful house by the sea and lives a perfect life: she is beautiful like all of her friends, her boyfriend is her brother’s best friend and she always dresses fashionable; her family is one of the most important families of Sol City because her grandfather was one of two scientists that discovered something that has changed forever the future of humanity, the ability to turn people into GAP. GAP are genetically altered persons, they don’t get sick and age much more slowly than normal, so they can live even for 200 years; the GAP are perfect and stand out among ordinary people like small suns with their blond hair, blue eyes and the perfect bodies. In Sol City there are only GAP and to protect them from normal people the city is walled and enclosed by massive gates; outside there are the naturals, those who can’t afford the alteration but also anti-GAP, people against human being manipulation. Zoe never left the gates of Sol City, she never needed to, but suddenly Liam disappears: the authorities don’t seem to be interested in his missing so Zoe decides to look herself for her brother, but to do so she’ll need someone who can help her to settle and survive outside the gates of the perfect city, she’ll need Noah..

First volume of a tetralogy, Perception is set in a future marked by climate changeS and technological innovations: at birth every person gets implanted a chip in the wrist, which is used both to make any payment and to collect all the information about that person. Cars no longer exist, replaced by less polluting anti-gravity vehicles able to move automatically; the population is composed of GAP and naturals: not all naturals, however, accept the existence of GAP, indeed there are many groups that don’t miss a chance to protest against the alteration of human being. Noah leads  one of these groups, his natural family has always been opposed to the treatment, regardless of the economic aspect; Noah is a leader, a charismatic guy capable of attract the attention of the crowd, and above all he has the right knowledge network to help Zoe investigate about her brother missing. Zoe is an interesting character, from spoiled girl she’s forced to open her eyes to the reality outside the gates of the perfect Sol City, to the misery and diseases that affect naturals; thanks to Noah she’s able to grow and overcome social differences, at the end she even prefer the outside world than her golden cage. The story is told very well and until the end you can’t understand why Liam is missing, many clues are given but I would never have arrived at the solution of the case without reading the book till the end!
It was a great read, usually first volumes tend to be quiet, but in this case we have immediately a great deal of action and plot twists, so you arrive at the open end wishing to find out immediately what will happen in the second volume.

Totally recommended!
