Sofia è una ragazza molto carina tormentata dal più classico dei problemi di cuore: ha una cotta per il suo migliore amico, che però ha appena iniziato una relazione con un’altra ragazza. La sera del suo compleanno Sofia decide di allontanarsi dalla festa e dalla vista dei due ragazzi abbracciati, preferendo passeggiare in solitudine lungo la spiaggia per schiarirsi le idee; quando però un ragazzo dall’aria pericolosa le si avvicina Sofia non immagina che la sua vita sia in procinto di cambiare totalmente.

Risvegliatasi in una fredda stanza di pietra, la ragazza inizia sul serio a preoccuparsi per la sua sorte e a temere per la sua vita: lentamente grazie ai pochi dettagli che le vengono rivelati Sofia scopre di trovarsi in mezzo a vampiri e di essere una delle ragazze destinate a formare l’harem del più potente vampiro che sia mai esistito, Derek Novak.

Primo libro di una serie sui vampiri, A shade of vampire ci trasporta in un’isola misteriosa, non presente sulle mappe geografiche e protetta dalla luce del sole grazie ad un potente incantesimo vecchio di secoli. Qui vive una comunità di vampiri guidati dalla famiglia Novak, di sangue reale e celebre per aver dato i natali al principe Derek, il salvatore indicato da una profezia; gli umani hanno per i vampiri un ruolo fondamentale in quanto svolgono i compiti di bassa manovalanza e ovviamente forniscono il nutrimento ai loro “padroni”. Ciò che distingue questo romanzo dagli altri è senza dubbio la particolare ambientazione che l’autrice è riuscita a creare, mentre il villaggio in cui vivono gli umani sembra tipico del medioevo gli alloggi dei vampiri nobili sono altamente tecnologici e costruiti sulla cima di alberi altissimi. Molto interessanti poi sono anche i brevi accenni al passato dei Novak e al ritorno di una minaccia che sembrava ormai sconfitta per sempre, purtroppo però sono proprio rari questi riferimenti all’aspetto guerriero del romanzo; sicuramente questo è dovuto al fatto che in questo primo volume l’autrice ha preferito limitarsi a presentare i personaggi e le loro relazioni per poi addentrarsi nel prossimo libro nella vicenda vera e propria.

Ho trovato questa lettura piacevole anche per quanto riguarda i protagonisti, Sofia è una ragazza tenace e decisa a tenersi stretta alla vita, Derek sa un po’ di già visto, il vampiro tormentato che odia doversi mantenere in vita attraverso la sofferenza altrui (anche se in alcuni momenti sembra gli dia più fastidio il fatto di esserne dipendente, l’incapacità di controllare l’istinto animalesco che è proprio della sua razza). Mi sarebbe piaciuto approfondire la conoscenza anche degli altri personaggi, spero nel prossimo libro di poterlo fare :)

Sofia is a very pretty girl plagued by the most classic of heart problems: she has a crush on her best friend who has just started a relationship with another girl. On the evening of her birthday Sofia decides to leave the party, preferring to walk alone along the beach to clear her mind, but when a dangerous-looking  guy approaches her Sofia has no idea that her life is about to change totally. Awakened in a cold stone room, she starts to seriously worry about her fate and fear for her life: thanks to the few details revealed to her, Sofia finds herself in the midst of vampires, she’s gonna be one of the girls of the harem of the most powerful vampire that has ever existed, Derek Novak.

First book in a series about vampires, A shade of vampire takes us to a mysterious island, not present on geographical maps and protected from sunlight thanks to a powerful spell centuries old. Here lives a community of vampires led by the Novak family, famous for being the birthplace of Derek Prince, the savior indicated by a prophecy; humans are really important to vampires as they play a key role in the tasks of low grade and obviously provide nourishment to their "masters." What sets this book from others is certainly the particular setting that the author has created, while the village in which humans live seems typical of the Middle Ages the lodgings of the noble vampires are highly technological and built on top of tall trees. Very interesting are the brief references to the past of Novaks and the return of a threat that seemed defeated forever, but unfortunately there are just few references to the warrior part of the story, probably because in this first volume the author chose to only present the characters and their relationships and then go into the next book in the story itself.

I liked this book also regarding the protagonists, Sofia is a tough girl, determined to hold on to life, while Derek seems something already seen, the tormented vampire who hates living through the suffering of others (even if at times he seems more bothered by the fact of being dependent, the inability to control the animal instinct which belongs to his race). I would have liked to learn more of the other characters, I hope to do so in the next book :)
